ShaperRusty Preisendorfer, a passionate surfer and dedicated to the surfing lifestyle, had been building surfboards since 1969, when he was just 16 years old. His boards quickly gained a strong reputation, especially those ridden by Peter Townend and Shaun Tomson, world champions in 1976 and 1978, respectively.

By the mid-1980s, he was supplying boards to many of the world’s top surfers competing on the professional tour, while also serving as a judge at major surf competitions. At that time, with many of the world’s leading surfers riding his boards in competition, he decided to step away from judging and from Canyon Surfboards the company he had been shaping for to start his own brand.

In 1985, he founded Rusty Surfboards in San Diego, California, with the goal of producing high-performance surfboards, particularly models designed for bigger surfers.
