About the board:

Over 20 years ago, I made the first Moby. I had been shaping fish boards back in the early ’70s. I wanted to revisit the glide and speed of a fish.

It did the job in smaller waves, and I even rode it on a few bigger days. I was really happy with it. It replaced 2 or 3 boards I kept in the back of my truck.

In 2005, I made my first 4-fin Moby. I really liked the feel of that ride. I had surfed waves up to about 5 feet. One day, the surf looked too small, so I took my Moby to Blacks. Nothing else. Lucky for me, I had a key. When I reached the end of the road, the waves were exactly what I expected: small but clean. I put on my wetsuit, pulled the Moby off the truck bed, and closed the hatch. I checked the lineup and took a double look. A solid 6-foot set. Fu#k! Well, it was the only board I had with me, so off I went.

On my first wave, I got tripped up, thinking I would really have to pull on the rails. No way. The board blasted off like a bat out of hell. No top end. After a few more waves, I was completely convinced of this design and its versatility.

It’s been very popular—some of my good friends had them. Interestingly, their kids, some of the best LJ reef surfers, tried them and didn’t want to give them back. They asked for duplicates. Not smaller, more pulled-in versions. The same boards. They actually rode them on bigger days.

Because of its size, it’s a great board for beginners and an excellent alternative to a longboard. It happens to be good for all skill levels and surf conditions. The entry rocker is relaxed, helping with paddling. The exit rocker is moderately positive, aiding turns and fitting waves better. The fuller outline provides lots of surface area: glide and speed. The rails are fuller but somewhat angular, with a lower apex, giving lift and control.
