About the board:

The Blade traces its roots back to the famous 1984 model.

Rusty has a long history of crafting boards with semi-flat decks, dating back to his early shaping years in 1969. With the arrival of the tri-fin in 1980, team riders were already requesting thinner boards. While most shapers and surfers moved toward DOME decks, Rusty went the opposite way, creating flatter decks with square rails in the last 14–16 inches of the tail.

In the summer of 1983, Hang Ten sponsored a series of qualifying events along the California coast. One took place at Ocean Beach, San Diego, where Rusty, already a professional competition judge, was officiating. Many pros were present, as the next contest would be in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa. It was Rusty’s first time seeing Occy surf and he noticed he was having issues with his board. While Occy was in Jeffreys, Rusty shaped a board for him for the next contest in Huntington Beach.

Occy didn’t use that board for the contest but took it home. With this board, Occy won the Pro Junior and tied for 3rd in the next contest in Japan. He broke the nose in the semifinals; Bob Hurley from Billabong called Rusty to make more boards for Occy. The rest is history—Occy became one of the most influential surfers in the world.

The flat deck makes the board thinner in the stringer, allowing more flex and stability. Physics: DOME decks have less flex. A thinner board keeps the deck line following the bottom line, creating a more natural flow and sharper turning arcs.

Angular rails with less volume between the apex and the top of the rail create a knife-like edge, providing more drive and powerful turns. The lower section of the rail remains soft, so it doesn’t “catch.”

The tail features a pronounced edge combined with a flat finish.

Years ago, Rusty collaborated with Occy and Billabong to produce 100 numbered boards, all shaped by Rusty and signed by Occy. While originally intended as display pieces, many were surfed, impressing everyone. Rusty then updated the model with a single-to-double concave bottom and flat tail, replaced the beak nose with a traditional shortboard nose, and the feedback was incredible. Our Australian team rider, Harry Bryant, said Blade boards improved his surfing—today all his boards are Blade.

Rusty added 4 channels for testing with Harry, who now only rides Blade boards with channels in all conditions.

Two options are available:

Channels with single-to-double concave bottom and flat tail
No channels with single concave all the way through
