About the board:
My first custom board, back in 1967, was a Mirandon Brothers Twin Fin from La Jolla. Six months later, I made a shorter one. Then, in the fall of 1969, I shaped my first board entirely on my own—another twin fin, 6’3”, with my own design tweaks. Saying I have experience with twin fins is an understatement.
In 1979, I partnered with Shaun Tomson to shape boards at The Canyon. Shaun was one of the key proponents of twin fins. He was a challenging client, but I learned a great deal—much of which is still incorporated into today’s designs.
While working with Shaun, I refined the bottom contours: a shallow single concave feeding into a vee, which then splits into a double concave in front of the fins, exiting along the rail behind the wing. The double vee has a subtle crown and exits the tail with a slight convexity. Fin placement, tail design, and concave work together to create firm, solid turns. The rail feel is very close to that of a modern performance shortboard.
