About the board:
The Shortie is a new shortboard by James “Chilli” Cheal. As described by Jack Robbo in the 2021 Stab In The Dark, “this board is easy to ride. You don’t have to think—just jump on it and surf.” Our new performance driver brings high-performance surfing into a shortboard designed for intermediate to advanced surfers.
The Shortie was refined throughout 2021 with Adriano de Souza (and the Chilli team riders) during his final year on the WSL Championship Tour, and James felt it was ready for that year’s Stab In The Dark with Jack Robinson.
James had “user-friendly” combined with “high performance” in mind. He developed a balanced rocker from nose to tail (creating a wide, generous sweet spot), a moderate single concave (generating speed with drive), and a semi-rounded pin tail (control in the pocket at high speed). The result is a forgiving performance shortboard that’s easy to jump on and instantly feel comfortable with (a key factor in Stab In The Dark, where there are no second chances).
The generous sweet spot comes from a unique extra foam distribution along the stringer line, making it an excellent paddler. You may notice that the thickness in proportion to the length and width seems slightly higher, but this strategic design creates a board that allows you to surf without overthinking. The thickness is balanced by a medium-performance rail, providing full control in critical sections of the wave.
The Shortie fits into the Chilli range as a solid 3–6 ft wave driver. Choose your volume and this is the perfect board for your next surf trip abroad, a great winter board, or your go-to when it’s pumping at home.
